Guguan Scenic Area, one of Taiwan's famous hot spring tourist destinations, is located in Bo'ai Village, Heping District. Originally the habitat of the Atayal Tribe, it sits at an altitude of about 800 meters. Guguan is situated beside the Dajia River, with steep terrain and towering cliffs. Its precious natural resource is the hot springs that emerge from the foothills and flow through the mountains. In addition to hot springs, Guguan has two primitive suspension bridges. One is the "Guguan Suspension Bridge," the most famous and representative bridge in Guguan and a landmark. Another bridge near the Guguan Post Office is the "Shao Lai Suspension Bridge," named in memory of an Atayal chief. Both hot springs and these famous scenic bridges are must-see spots when visiting Guguan. This route starts from Taichung Train Station, follows County Route 129 through Zhongxing Ridge to Xinshe (County Routes 93, 95, 95-1), crosses Long'an Bridge to Provincial Highway 8 towards Guguan. The total route is about 60km with an elevation gain of about 1000m, making it a relatively easy route. It initially passes Zhongxing Ridge, one of the Dasyueshan routes, with a steep incline in the last 3km. Seeing the convenience store signifies the highest point and the toughest part of this route conquered.

Afterwards, you'll descend via County Route 93 towards Xinshe, then connect to County Route 95, passing by "Baileng Canal." This downhill section has frequent traffic, so be cautious of road conditions and safety. Upon reaching County Route 95 and crossing Long'an Bridge, you'll join Provincial Highway 8, ending the downhill stretch. The next part is heading towards Guguan! The 23km journey from Provincial Highway 8 to Guguan has an elevation gain of 345m, mostly a gentle slope. The scenery is beautiful, with notable spots like Bailu Suspension Bridge and Ma'an Dam where you can rest and appreciate the Central Cross-Island Highway's beauty. Besides the scenery, there are also delicacies along the way, such as Baileng popsicles and Baileng meat buns. If you're tired, take a break to cool off. Baileng popsicles come in dozens of flavors; the author recommends "Honey Five-Leaf Pine" and "Cream Corn." The former has a refreshing mix of light pine and honey flavors, while the latter offers a unique taste. The Baileng meat buns with homemade sweet and spicy sauce are also delicious, but they often sell out by 5 PM or earlier, so plan accordingly!
