AirTag is a item tracker developed by Apple Inc., released on April 20, 2021, during a presentation. It is priced at $29 per unit in the United States.

Using Bluetooth signals and the built-in Apple U1 ultra-wideband chip in an iPhone (paired with the "Find My" network), it can be attached to objects as an accessory. When the owner cannot find an item, it displays its location and guides the owner to its direction.

If you are one of the early purchasers, you may need to replace the battery soon. It is powered by a common CR2032 button cell battery. While it cannot be recharged, a single set of batteries can provide a year of battery life, and users can replace the battery themselves when the AirTag is out of power. However, AirTag users should be cautious when buying CR2032 batteries, as some types of CR2032 batteries may not work with AirTag.

Apple reminds users on the AirTag support page that when replacing the battery, they should avoid buying CR2032 batteries with bitter coatings, as this could affect the conductivity of the battery contacts.

Replacing the AirTag Battery

1. Push down and rotate the polished stainless steel battery cover of the AirTag counterclockwise until the cover stops rotating.
2. Remove the battery cover and the battery.
3. Insert a new CR2032 lithium-ion 3V button cell battery (available at most electronics stores and pharmacies), with the positive side facing up. You will hear a sound indicating that the battery is connected.
4. Depending on the alignment of the coating and the battery contacts, CR2032 batteries with bitter coatings may not be suitable for AirTag or other battery-powered products.
5. Reinstall the battery cover and ensure that the three latches on the battery cover align with the three slots on the AirTag.
6. Rotate the battery cover clockwise until it stops rotating.

Why is there a bitter coating on the battery? This is because button cell batteries are small in size and there have been cases where young children accidentally swallowed them out of curiosity. Therefore, some battery manufacturers (such as Maxell) have applied a layer of bitter coating to the surface of the battery to prevent children from ingesting them. However, this bitter coating may affect the battery contacts of the AirTag, causing the device to malfunction and not work properly.

When purchasing batteries, be sure to check if there is a bitter coating label on the battery. The King's CR2032 lithium-ion 3V button cell battery available in Taiwanese convenience stores has a bitter coating label on the packaging, and it will not function properly after installation. Pay extra attention to this.
